Dual 1218 Automatic Turntable-Refurbished and Ortofon F15E MkII with New Stylus
A beautiful Dual 1218 4spd Automatic turntable, refurbished and in good working order. All packaged in a nice wood base and original dust cover in very good shape, including the hinges. Heavy duty gold-plated phono cables replaced the old cables. It's because Dual, along with Garrard, used some really nasty grease which, over time, turned into glue. The only way to restore one of these to working order is to remove practically all of the overly complicated auto-mechanism, remove the old grease, re-grease, and put everything back together. It's a full eight-hour job, and some of the parts are stuck together so badly that they are really difficult to remove. And if everything isn't put back exactly the way it was engineered, it won't work properly. The mechanics are heavy, well-made parts, but everything has to be precisely assembled for them to function.

I mention this as an introduction to the maintenance that was done on this turntable. I have done the following work on this nice Dual 1218.

Removed most all of the old parts, cleaned, relubricated, and re-installed them. Took apart the motor and oiled the bearings. Replaced the all-important steurpimpel with a brand new one. A very tiny part, but if it crumbles, none of the auto-functions work, including the tonearm return. Added damping fluid to the cueing piston. Cleaned the contacts on the cartridge muting switch. Replaced the old stylus on the. With a new elliptical stylus. Cosmetically, this unit is in excellent condition with hardly a blemish on it. The all-wood base in fine shape, but does have a ring in the black portion of the base in the left rear corner where a Watts Dust Bug or other appliance once sat.

The dust cover is original, with very fine scratching and no cracks, and the hinges are in good shape. It's a real beauty, overall. The cartridge sled does not have the tracking angle adjustment knob on it that was originally part of the 1218. I believe the sled was replaced by a sled from another model, essentially making this an automatic single play table, especially since it does not come with the multi-play spindle.

Personally, I don't like my records "dropped" or stacked, so this would be perfect for my use. The Ortofon FF15E MKII cartridge is a very nice moving magnet cartridge which has garnered praise form many audiophiles.

It has great definition throughout the entire frequency range and nice channel separation. I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth and quiet the massive turntable is, even though it's only 10 inches in diameter to allow for a more compact turntable. And the ultra-light tonearm can accomodate a high compliance cartridge. I don't think you'll find many Dual turntables as completely refurbished as this unit.

You can see the specs for this fine unit and for the Ortofon cartridge below. I will pack your turntable with the utmost care to ensure it arrives in good condition. Dual 1218 Turntable Sp ecs. Wow and Flutter 0.09% wrms. Speeds 33, 45, 78 rpm.
